The 8 Hp Honda motor takes regular gas. Prior to departure please ensure you have
enough gas on board to use the motor for your entire trip.
Check both the gas container feeding the motor and the top-up
container (located in the cockpit portside
storage bin)
and replenish as necessary. Gas can be obtained by walking up
to a station along Burrard St.
Starting the Motor:
Normally when cold; PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND SET THE THROTTLE TO IDLE. Lower it into the water and keep it there. Just pull out the choke and draw the starter cord to a comfortable position then give it a fast pull the rest of the way. It may take 2-3 pulls, then let the cord go to wind in. Push the choke in after 30-60 seconds. If run in the last 2 hours, just pull to start. If you changed gas tanks; prime the motor with gas by pumping the “bulb” handle (located in the cockpit aft storage bin) by constantly
squeezing the bulb until hard. Ensure that
the engine is in the vertical position if its not, this is can
be adjusted by pulling hood cover and releasing
the engine angle bracket into the up position and lowering
the engine.
Cold Engine:- Ensure that the gear shift is in the neutral
position, bulb is hard, choke is in the out position and the
throttle is in the start position. Pull on the starter cord
until the engine starts, feather the engine via throttle until
the engine runs smoothly allow the engine to run for
15-30 seconds on the choke, then push the choke in,
let the engine idle for 2-3 mins prior to departure.
Warm Engine:- Ensure that the gear shift is in the neutral position, choke is in and throttle is in the start position. Pull on the starter cord until the engine starts.
Note: Do not use choke on a warm engine this has the potential to flood the engine making it difficult to start the engine.
Trouble Shooting the Motor:
After numerous of pulls the engine fails to start check the following:
· excessive Choke:- Engine has flooded, push choke in if the choke was engaged, allow the engine to stand for 3-5 mins before attempting to re-start if problem persists remove spark plug and clean excessive gas and allow to dry.
· Check all connections to the engine, check gas container connection, check for any breakages or cracks in the gas pipe, check gas container and bulb for leaks and gas.
· Water contamination take of engine cover, clean and dry around connections remove spark plug lead and plug clean and dry
· Electrical connections check all connections for breakage or cracked leads shorting to the engine case
· Green warning light, check oil level and possible leakages and additional oil if required until light is off.
Motor Failure at Sea:
The following procedures should help in the event of the following;
No Gas:- Sail to nearest marina with a gas station inform marina / coastguard of the situation via radio (channel 16), give boat description, anchor if possible and ask for assistance from the marina regarding obtaining gas.
Note if there is no wind and you are drifting declare a PANPAN - carryout PANPAN procedure as outlined in the radio section of this manual
